SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust Update - July 6 2020

From the unprecedented impact resulting from COViD-19, since returning to Level 1, and beginning to understand the complete impact this disruption has brought on our wider community, the Trust has spent the past few weeks exploring a range of giving models which focus on being more directly responsive to the needs and aspirations of Queenstown Lakes District. A giving model which focuses on impactful funding was decided as the most appropriate given the unique challenges our community has, and will continue to experience. 　

With this in mind, this year the Trust will be holding a ‘closed’ funding round. This means that the Trust will not be calling for applications. Instead, the Trust will look to partner with selected organisations already supporting the community in the following priority areas;　

  • Basic Needs (Food, Shelter, Warmth)
  • Mental Wellbeing
  • Rangatahi Development

We acknowledge that many of you may be disappointed by this news, however, we hope you will be supportive of our decision and the rationale which informed it, in light of the impacts experienced within our communities.

SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust

The SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust is proud to contribute to the local community of Queenstown by supporting many worthy organisations, both large and small.

To date, the SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust has granted NZ$1.92 million to more than 667 charitable organisations in the Queenstown – Lakes District.

For the year ended 30 June 2019, Queenstown Casinos Limited contributed NZ$149,723 to the SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust.  Otago Casinos Limited contributed NZ$1,435 to the Wharf Casino Charitable Trust which in turned donated it to the SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust for distribution to the community.

Criteria

The SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust considers applications from community and charitable organisations involved in the following activities:

  1. Community projects that provide care, treatment or counselling, teach life-skills and provide educational programmes or research.
  2. Projects that promote the arts, culture and entertainment in New Zealand, including recognition and understanding of different cultures living in New Zealand.
  3. Provide assistance with or support of facilities, programmes or initiatives providing for the financial security of families.

Funding principles

The SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust makes grants to organisations (and projects) that:

  1. Can prove their ability to plan and undertake activities effectively, with a good record of accountability for funding;
  2. Are striving for self-reliance, and are able to make some financial contribution to the project; and
  3. Focus on areas where a real need can be proven.

Funding exclusions

The SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust does not fund:

  • Individuals;
  • Loan and endowment funds;
  • Activities occurring outside of New Zealand or the geographic boundary of the Queenstown-Lakes district;
  • Business or investment capital; or
  • Retrospective activities.

Lower priority funding

Outlined below are activities that are considered a low-priority for funding:

  • Adult recreation, including sport;
  • General operational funding including administration and rent; and
  • Salaries and wages.

Joanne has lived in Queenstown for 35 years where she specialises in Property Management and Advisory, including having owned several businesses, and is an Independent Company Director. Joanne has been involved with many community groups including Sports Groups, Plunket, schools and since 2006, with St John. As a contractor to the Queenstown lakes District Council she assisted numerous community groups securing tenure on Council land and buildings throughout the district. She was invested as a Commander of the Order of St John in 2018, spent four years as the Chairperson of the South Island Regional Trust Board and sat on the National Governing Board. Joanne is an experienced Director, currently sitting on six Boards including charitable, Council owned Organisations, Crown Entities and commercial Boards. Joanne is married to Danny, has three adult children, and enjoys walking, biking, fishing, and gardening.

Jonathan Browne

Jonathan Browne is the General Manager of SkyCity Queenstown.

Jonathan joined SkyCity in May 2015 and is responsible for overseeing the operations of SkyCity Queenstown Casino and SkyCity Wharf Casino in Queenstown.  Jonathan has extensive experience in the gaming, consumer goods, hospitality and tourism industries.
