Te Korakora on Federal brings Matariki celebrations to life

Federal street transformed into a Māori street carnival for one night only on Friday 20 July. The popular event attracted a large crowd of 2,500 throughout the evening to experience the tastes, sights and sounds of Te Ao Māori all in celebration of Matariki, the Māori New Year.

Te Kawerau a Maki one of the 19 iwi of Tamaki Makarau took on the hosting of this year’s Matariki Festival in partnership with Auckland Council across the Auckland region. This attracted a diverse group of people who came together under the stars to share in the festivities. 

Michael Ahearne, Chief Operating Officer, says SKYCITY is proud to support Auckland Council’s Matariki Festival for the third year running by hosting the street festival.

“Te Korakora on Federal was a wonderful event that brought together the best of Māori street food and music, giving people from all cultures the opportunity to experience this vibrant celebration. We lit the Sky Tower to resemble a sunrise in celebration of Matariki, so having Te Korakora on Federal taking place right underneath was very special.” he says.

An impressive line up of local music talent including Anika Moa, Annie Crummer, Che Fu, Ria Hall, Tawaroa Kawana and Waxed Crew Collective, ensured the event was a true celebration of Māori and Pacifika talent in Aotearoa. In addition to the stellar talent, the cuisine on offer was another significant attraction. A highlight for attendees was the traditional Pork and Puha and Hangi kai offerings.
