SKYCITY welcomes in the New Year 2018 with a bang!
The Sky Tower’s annual fireworks display has again lead the world in welcoming 2018, watched by tens of thousands in Auckland and millions more with the midnight moment broadcast worldwide.
SKYCITY Auckland General Manager Hotels and Sky Tower, Brad Burnett, says the fireworks top off the biggest night of the year for SKYCITY Auckland.
“SKYCITY is proud to deliver the annual Sky Tower fireworks display that’s enjoyed by locals and visitors across various vantage points in Auckland, and watched by many more worldwide.
“The fireworks top off a massive night for SKYCITY with around 30,000 visitors coming to enjoy our restaurants and bars, entertainment, free concert on Federal Street and the best views of the fireworks in Auckland. This year it was particularly special with the Sky Tower having celebrated its 20th birthday earlier this year,” says Mr Burnett.
From 9pm, a laser animation show and countdown clock was beamed onto two sides of the Sky Tower, preceding the five minute pyrotechnic display at midnight. Both Kiwi themed, the laser show featured Kiwiana icons including a tui, kiwi and tuatara, while the fireworks display was choreographed and simulcast to a track of number one hits from 2017 with New Zealand artists Lorde and Six60 featuring.
Entertainers across many of SKYCITY’s venues kept crowds festive throughout the night, as well as a free all ages concert on Federal Street, headlined by Sons of Zion.
