Sky Tower fireworks ignite Auckland’s New Year celebrations

The highly anticipated Sky Tower fireworks display will again be lighting up Auckland’s skyline at the midnight moment this New Year’s Eve, leading the world in welcoming 2017.

The five-minute pyrotechnic display at midnight will be complimented by a Kiwi themed laser animation show and countdown beamed on to two sides of the Sky Tower from 9pm.

SKYCITY Auckland Acting General Manager Matt Ballesty says the Sky Tower fireworks are an important focal point to the city’s celebrations.

“The Sky Tower fireworks are SKYCITY’s gift to Auckland and we’re proud to have been delivering the New Year’s Eve fireworks display for close to two decades now. The display can be seen from all over the city so locals and visitors alike can celebrate the New Year together,” says Mr Ballesty.

The pyrotechnic display will be choreographed to a music track, so those watching from vantage points around the city can tune in to More FM (91.8 FM) to listen to the tracks played in time with the display. The SKYCITY Auckland Facebook page will also feature a live stream of the fireworks for those further afield.

“The fireworks top off a massive night for SKYCITY, with over 100 entertainers in every venue on site including a fantastic free concert on Federal Street. We’re expecting around 30,000 people to come here to celebrate,” says Mr Ballesty.

From 6pm until 1am on New Year’s Eve Federal Street will be transformed in to a concert venue with vintage soul/funk band Hipstamatics playing from 7pm until 10pm, and top 40 DJ Fusion bringing in the New Year At twentyone, DJ Max Key will be playing at the midnight moment.

SKYCITY Auckland is partnering again with PyroStar International and Soulstorm Lasers Ltd to deliver the New Year’s Eve show.

SKYCITY main site will be R20 from 7pm, the only exception being Hotel, Sky Tower or food and beverage guests (excluding Andy's Burger’s & Bar where R20 will apply). Federal Street will be closed from 6pm on 31 December until 3am on 1 January.
