Major Broadway-style musical launches at SKYCITY Theatre

SKYCITY has evolved its dynamic entertainment offering with the launch of a world-class musical comedy to take up residency in the SKYCITY Theatre this October.

The City of 100 Lovers show simultaneously takes viewers through an entertaining love story while showcasing the places, culture and way of life of Aucklanders, which attracts millions of tourists to Tamaki Makaurau every year.

A first of its kind and with an $8 million-dollar budget, the City of 100 Lovers live stage show tells a uniquely Auckland story, and has been created with a global production team of uncompromising talent from New Zealand, Australia, China and the USA. The show also attracted internationally renowned director Tony Stimac who hails from New York and whose expertise lies in creating original musicals.

General Manager Marketing Auckland, Jon Spittle is delighted to see the show come to life, as well as the opportunities it presents for the SKYCITY Auckland precinct.

“The vision and ambition of the 100 Lovers production team has resulted in an incredible theatrical experience, combining song, dance, music, drama and technology within the narrative of a genuine girl meets boy love story. It is fabulous to see the team’s vision come to life on the stage in this way.

“Alongside the Sky Tower, our hotels, bars and restaurants, casino, Let’s Play Live eSports studio and the recently announced All Blacks Experience, the City of 100 Lovers provides a unique, compelling and delightfully entertaining addition to the mix of entertainment offerings we provide at SKYCITY,” says Spittle.

In a fitting nod to New Zealand’s heritage, the show derives its name from Tamaki Makaurau, the Maori name for Auckland, which translates to City desired by many.

Cultural advisor and Māori talent curator, Paora Sharples, has brought his wealth of knowledge and experience in the areas of traditional and contemporary Māori performing arts and te reo Māori to City of 100 Lovers. The production will have strong Māori themes throughout woven into the music, dance, costume and storyline.

Brett O’Riley from Templar Tourism Management, the production company responsible for producing the show says he’s thrilled to bring a product to Auckland that will fill a gap in the market for evening entertainment options in Auckland city, and provide visitors with even more reasons to stay longer in the city.
