Laser animation show added to Sky Tower’s New Year celebrations

New Zealand leads the world in welcoming in the new year, and this year SKYCITY Auckland’s highly anticipated pyrotechnic display will include a new laser animation show beamed onto the Sky Tower.

SKYCITY is partnering with PyroStar International and Soulstorm Lasers Ltd to create a four hour New Year’s Eve show, culminating in a five minute pyrotechnic display at the special midnight moment.

Julie Garlick, SKYCITY General Manager Marketing, says that the New Year’s Eve display is ramping up this year and will have something for everyone.

“On the eve of our 20th birthday we wanted to do something new, so this year we’ve created an impressive laser show in the lead up to the midnight moment as well as a pyrotechnic display timed to music.

“Like Times Square, the large countdown clocks will be seen all over the city so locals and visitors alike can celebrate the New Year together,” says Ms Garlick.

The newest element this year is the four hour animated laser show developed by leading New Zealand laser show company Soulstorm Lasers. The show will be beamed onto the east and north-west sides of the Sky Tower and will be seen from many vantage points around the city.

Benjamin Lawrence, Director of Soulstorm Lasers, says that projecting laser animations onto the Sky Tower has always been a dream for his company, and it will be the highest profile project he has worked on.

“It’s great to work with SKYCITY on what will be one of the brightest and most widely visible laser light animation shows in New Zealand,” says Mr Lawrence of Soulstorm Lasers.

Robert McDermott, Director of PyroStar International, has developed world-class pyrotechnic displays around the globe and feels privileged to play a part in evolving SKYCITY Auckland’s New Year’s Eve display.

“The sky is my canvas and I consider pyrotechnics as an art form that speaks to all ages and cultures. This year the pyrotechnic display will be choreographed and designed to music and will engage the major senses of sight and sound together,” says Mr McDermott of PyroStar International.

The audio track for the display includes the classic ‘Auld Lang Syne’, along with tracks from Savage, Shapeshifter and Sol3 Mio.  Those watching from vantage points around the city can tune in to More FM (91.8 FM) to listen to the tracks played in time with the display.

SKYCITY has organised and funded Auckland’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display for almost two decades, and as the first major celebration of the New Year it’s highly anticipated both locally and globally.

SKYCITY Auckland will be an entertainment destination on New Year’s Eve with dinners, parties, events and entertainment throughout its venues, including Jetski Safari playing at TwentyOne and the sold out Grand View dinner. SKYCITY main site will be R20 from 7pm. Federal Street will close to vehicles from 7pm for a free concert through to 1am.
